In south-western Africa, Namibia is a land that you will find captivating! The colors are fantastic: from the incredible dunes of the Namib Desert to the white clay pans, red dunes and blue skies of Deadvlei. There is abundant wildlife residing in the National Parks and Namibia is also home to the richest succulent flora in the world with 1/3 of the nearly 10,000 succulent species flourishing here. Along the Atlantic lies the legendary Skeleton Coast: the name stemmed from the seal and whale bones that were once strewn about the shore from the whaling industry, although these days the coast is the final resting place of shipwrecks caught by offshore rocks and fog.

DAY BY DAY JOURNEY

Day 1: Windhoek

Welcome to Namibia! On arrival, your guide will meet you and escort you to your tour bus to transfer you to Windhoek. Before checking into your hotel, your guide will take you on a brief Windhoek City Orientation. Windhoek, Namibia’s capital city, is described as a city with a ‘continental’ atmosphere and this can be ascribed to its architecture – historical buildings dating back to German colonial rule. Windhoek was initially known as Ai-gams a Nama word meaning ‘firewater’, ‘steam’ or ‘smoke’ because of the area’s plentiful hot springs. Enjoy the dinner buffet at the Avani Hotel before bedtime. (D)

Day 2: Outjo

This morning you head off to Etosha National Park. Etosha is one of the most special national parks in Africa, and its distinguishing feature is the giant – 5,000 km² – salt flat known as the Etosha Pan. It is so large that it can be seen from space. This gigantic area is actually the remains of a dried-out lake, and the white, seemingly endless salt flat is a fantastic, almost surreal sight. Despite the extreme conditions, the area is still home to a rich wildlife population, and the park is considered to be one of the very finest places in Africa for observing a variety of animals – particularly around the watering holes, which also attract plenty of migratory birds that come there to breed.(B,D)

Day 3: Outjo

The visit to Etosha National Park is one of the absolute highlights of the trip, and today you will be taken on a game drive to experience lions, giraffes, gnus, kudu, zebras and elephants searching for food and water, or relaxing in the shade of a tree. In Etosha, you also have a pretty good chance of spotting a number of rare and remarkably beautiful birds and animals such as elands (one of the largest antelopes), Damara Dik-Dik (one of the smallest antelopes), oryx with their long, straight black horns, black-headed impalas, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, Bataleur eagles and the lilac-breasted roller, with its magnificent and colorful plumage. (B,D)

Day 4: Namutoni

Enjoy a lovely relaxing breakfast before you head off to Etosha East through the park. During your travels through the park, your guide will stop at the various waterholes for a great chance to see the big and important game. (B,D)

Day 5: Grootfontein

This morning see more of the cultural side of Namibia. In the north of Namibia, en route to the untouched Bushman country and the Caprivi region, and only two hours away from the Etosha pan lies the Guest Farm Dornhügel. Here you can experience the unique combination of a homey atmosphere, stylish ambiance and rustic farm life. (B,D)

Day 6: Grootfontein

Become a part of the Namibian farm life – join on a game drive, at the waterhole, have a conversation with the farmer´s family or become extensively involved on the farm and accompany the farmhands to their workplace for one day. During that time, you can meet up to 1000 cows, 50 horses, giraffes, kudus, elands, dik-diks, warthogs and other wildlife. If you are fortunate you may even encounter the timid leopard. Savor the homemade jams, juices and homegrown vegetables. Order the famous Dornhügel game steak from antelopes hunted on the farm or the scrumptious Dornhügel beef steak. Both are prepared on a wood fired grill. (B,D)

Day 7: Otjiwarongo

On your way back to Windhoek you have your last overnight in Namibia at Africat Foundation, Okonjima Bush Lodge. Completed in 2010, the 96-kilometer fence surrounding the Okonjima Private Nature Reserve has created a reserve for Captive Carnivore rehabilitation (also home to brown hyenas and the resident leopards), a ‘safe’ area around Main Camp, Bush Camp, Bush Suite, the Omboroko Campsite and the PAWS Environmental Education Center. Although hunting is instinctive in carnivores, many of the cheetahs at AFRICAT lack experience due to being orphaned or removed from the wild at an early age. This inexperience, as well as their conditioning to captivity, makes them unsuitable for release. The Nature Reserve Park provides captive cheetahs and other carnivores with the opportunity to hone their hunting skills and become self-sustaining thereby giving them a chance to return to the wild. The captive cheetahs are fitted with radio-collars prior to their release into the reserve, so that their welfare and progress can be closely monitored. Rehabilitation gives a captive carnivore a second chance to be released back into the wild and to take the time it needs, to become a completely independent hunter – in a protected area right in the middle of commercial farmland! (B,D)

Day 8: Farewell Namibia

After breakfast, transfer to airport for your flight home. (B)
